In the mid-2010s, a large international team took up this issue, which also included scientific groups from China, Spain, Israel and the United States. It was reminiscent of the TV show “People’s Purchase”: laboratory tests, people’s tasting, data reduction into a common plan.
160 popular varieties were selected: both old and recently bred. They were tasted by 101 subjects. Then the number of varieties was expanded to 398, capturing data from previous studies.
Another part of the team was engaged in chemical analysis of the fetuses. They identified more than 400 organic compounds and measured the concentration of each of them in each variety.
In short, the fruits have been examined in the most thorough manner and in many different ways.
