Today, foods have become commonplace or a festive delicacy for us, but before they frightened people so much that they were refused to be eaten, so they were given only to animals or prisoners in prisons.
What is this food that inspires fear?
And let’s start with the potatoes brought to Russia by Peter I. True, he brought them to bring, but he did not explain how to eat properly. That is why the peasants did not eat edible tubers, but berries, which were considered poisonous. Later, of course, the potatoes were sorted out, turning it into a kind of “second bread”.
It’s no secret that rich borscht or any other soup can be cooked in bone broth. But even a century ago, bones were given only for food, preferring to cook stew exclusively on meat. Now, this is not surprising, because it is full of protein and collagen that are good for the skin.
Approximately as we have with potatoes in the United States, a similar situation has arisen with white cabbage, which until recently was considered inedible. By the way, in the West only now they began to discover such a familiar thing for us as sauerkraut.
At the time of the discovery of cocoa beans, they did not know how to make anything out of nothing. At first, cocoa was brewed, but it was far from the drink we were used to. It came out bitter, with a specific smell, and since it is bitter, it is poisonous. They followed the same logic.
Chocolates in Russia learned to make at the beginning of the last century, adopting European experience.
For a long time, tomatoes were considered “poisonous apples”, with which they even tried to poison one American commander. True, he defiantly showed the futility of efforts by going out onto the porch and defiantly eating a bucket of tomatoes.
The opinion about their toxicity has developed because of tin plates made with the addition of lead. It was lead that, reacting with the acid from the fruit, created a deadly compound.
Let’s move on to delicacies. Until the beginning of the last century, oysters were considered quite common food. Their mining was so active that one of the New York streets with the name Pearl Street was laid out of the shells. Obviously, due to the massive catch, stocks were depleted, making this seafood rare and expensive.
But black caviar was considered food for the poor at all. Until the beginning of the 20th century, sturgeons were also barbarously caught, destroying the population. Until 1910, in America, it was eaten as a simple snack. After that, the time came for generations who heard about black caviar, but not everyone saw it with their own eyes.
Well, let’s finish with lobsters, which were fed exclusively to prisoners. Moreover, there was even a special regulation that set the number of days for eating this delicacy, so as not to violate the principle of humanity. Now this product has become insanely popular, associated with luxury, largely due to the well-known service banned in Russia.
