Cases when beloved actors for various reasons leave films or series are not uncommon. Then the directors who want to cut off more money face a difficult task – to take a chance and replace the actor so as not to cause the audience’s anger.
As practice shows, this is far from often possible, because new heroes will always be compared with old ones out of nostalgic feelings. And here are just a few examples.
And let’s start with Vivien Leigh, the main star of Gone with the Wind, released in 1939. In 1994, a decision was made to shoot a sequel called Scarlett, in which Joanne Whalley was cast.
It is clear that Lee was no longer able to act, since she died in 1967, but the audience did not accept the replacement, since the actress did not hook them in anything.
Despite the fact that Robert Patrick played the T-1000 brilliantly, his appearance in The X-Files was not particularly appreciated. The creators stressed that he will play just a new character, but will not replace the usual Mulder from Duchovny.
However, this did not prevent a massive failure.
Peter Weller was a perfect fit for the first two RoboCop films, as he made the cyborg look tough and tough. However, he refused to participate in the continuation, wanting to prove himself in other projects.
That is why his place was taken by John Burke, who seemed wooden to the audience, and therefore could not win their love.
Fans of The Office will surely love and remember Steve Carell’s clumsy boss. However, at the end of the 7th season, the actor decided to leave the project and devote himself to his family. Then James Spader was taken in his place, who played the new boss – Robert California.
The audience did not forgive such a loss, so soon after Carell’s departure, the series had to be curtailed altogether.
Many would probably agree that the Mummy franchise didn’t need a third installment at all, let alone replace the sweet Rachel Weisz with the stern Maria Bello. The last one seemed too cold, which added tar to the already meaningless crazy attraction.
Linda Hamilton brilliantly played the harsh Sarah Connor in the first two parts of the “Terminator”, on which it was worth stopping this senseless pipeline. After all, when the allegedly equally strong Emilia Clarke was added to the “Genesis” to the grimacing Arnie, the audience rightly smashed the film to smithereens.
Asterix, performed by Christian Clavier, turned out to be attractive and inviting, and most importantly, he knew how to entertain perfectly. Clovis Cornillac, who appeared in Asterix at the Olympic Games, could not endear himself so much, since his game was more like antics. So it’s not enough just to put a mustache on another actor so that the substitution is ignored.
We will not touch on the performance of Christian Bale and Robert Pattinson in the Batman films, since this is a rare case when the actors managed to show two different superheroes. Let’s turn to the old pictures, where at the beginning the viewer was pleased by Val Kilmer, who quickly got bored with this role.
In his place, they decided to take the charismatic George Clooney. But here his game did not impress anyone. In general, like the entire film “Batman and Robin”, which collected a rating of 3.7 points on IMDb.
And what replacements of actors or characters in films or TV shows seemed inappropriate to you?
