Accidents on set are not uncommon. Employees of “Mosfilm” somewhere in their backyards found and published footage of a double filming of the film “Director” (1965).
According to the plot, the car of Yevgeny Yakovlevich’s character had to by all means overtake a convoy following along the sand dunes of Uzbekistan.
Filming took place 40 kilometers from Bukhara. Urbansky refused an understudy, because in all the past films he performed all the tricks himself. After three takes, for the best result, they began to shoot the fourth.
The car, having jumped from the dune, as if from a springboard, awkwardly lands with its front wheels in the sand, they are stuck, and the car turned over right on the actors. Judging by the reaction of the members of the film crew, the picture appeared disturbing to them.
The car is rare, there was no talk about any passive safety, about seat belts. At the moment of landing, Evgeny Urbansky “broke” on the seat: a fracture of the spine, a fracture of the cranial vault. The help of doctors did not help, the actor passed away in the hospital. He was only 32 years old.
Of course it’s scary. But what did the filmmakers expect? Why didn’t they calculate the trick, why, despite Urbansky, didn’t they attract stuntmen (you can’t make out the faces, what difference does it make who is sitting in the car)? Where is the insurance?
In general, it is very unfortunate that a talented actor left so early and so stupidly.
