On June 29, 2003, one of the most unusual crimes in British criminal history was committed in Manchester.
On that day, police officers who arrived at the call found two teenagers in an alley in Trafford (Manchester area). One of them, 16-year-old Mark, called the police. He claimed that an unknown person stabbed his friend John several times and fled. 14-year-old John lay unconscious in a pool of blood, but was alive.
John was taken to the hospital in critical condition. A kitchen knife found at the crime scene stabbed him several times in the stomach and once in the chest. The guy lost a lot of blood, his internal organs were damaged, but he survived, and a week later he was able to talk to the police.
And while John was being rescued by doctors, the police looked at the security cameras. The cameras showed that after John and Mark entered that alley in Trafford, no one else went there until the police arrived. When Mark was shown the video, he immediately admitted that he was the one who tried to kill John. He took a knife from his mother, carefully walked under all the surveillance cameras to an agreed place where there were no cameras, stabbed a friend and, as requested, waited 20 minutes before calling the police. Did you ask? Who? Directions to him were given by 44-year-old Janet from the Internet.
The cops began looking into Mark and John’s computers and found Janet in a Manchester teen chat room. The correspondence between Mark and Janet ended with the following dialogue:
“Do you want me to take him to the center of Trafford and kill him there?”
– Yes.
And the day before:
– Do you think you could kill someone?
– I never thought about it.
– Think about it, please.
– OK.
With Janet Mark spoke for several weeks. She introduced herself as an MI6 agent. Janet was ordered by Tony Blair to recruit Mark. After completing a series of tasks, Mark was supposed to become a secret agent, receive a large monetary reward, and also personally meet with the Prime Minister and the Queen. And Janet, a married woman and mother of two, promised to sleep with Mark if the task was successful.

The initiation into scouts was supposed to end with the murder of John. Janet wrote that it was necessary to wait 20 minutes after the murder, so that John would surely die, and she would arrive at the crime scene with the police and “get rid of” Mark. And Mark believed it all.
For some reason, he believed Janet, even when she told him that John was also a very valuable MI6 officer, the only one in the whole of Great Britain who knew the code for a top-secret safe located at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean.
When once enemy intelligence planned an assassination attempt on John at school, Mark was instructed by Janet to call the school and, posing as John’s father, report that his son was forced to miss classes due to a visit to the dentist.

In the chat, Mark also spoke with John himself, his 16-year-old half-sister Rachel and Kevin. After reading thousands of lines of correspondence, the police realized that John was writing for Rachel, Kevin and Janet. Everyone had a common spelling mistake – the word maybe (maybe) was written as mybye. Well, John himself confessed everything as soon as he came to his senses.
In this strange way, John orchestrated his own suicide. And Janet explained to Mark why he would need to kill his pen friend: John has a rare form of brain cancer, he will die soon and it would be better to save him from suffering. Mark believed in the safe at the bottom of the Atlantic, so he had no trouble believing that either.
The court assigned three years of supervision to John and two years to Mark (that is, they lived in a family, but they were constantly monitored by social workers assigned to them). John and Mark were forbidden to use the Internet without adult supervision, they were forbidden to see each other and chat with anyone. After announcing the verdict, the judge said: “The author of detective stories would pay dearly for a story like the story of Mark and John.”
