Cinema and fiction have long exploited the theme of demons and exorcism. Strengthens the belief in this and most religions that claim that people can be possessed. So it is not surprising that people have devoted several centuries to the fight against evil spirits.
This is what the following collection of stories and facts is devoted to.
In psychiatry, there is a concept of a disorder in which a person believes that he or someone close to him is possessed. It’s called “demonopathy”. By the way, it is widespread throughout the world, because in all countries there are references to demons with different names.
For a long time, interest in this phenomenon was reduced, until the film The Exorcist was released in 1973, causing a new wave of hysteria in society and neurosis. This is evidenced by the fact that for several weeks after the release of the picture, the Boston Catholic Center received requests every day to conduct an exorcism rite.
True, they believed in this before. In 1614, the Vatican issued official instructions for the exorcism of demons, and in 1999 it was revised. But if you believe her, every second suffers from obsession. In addition to banal signs, such as superhuman strength and the ability to chat in unknown languages, there are spitting, cursing, lack of shame and excessive masturbation.
The well-known Freud had a different attitude towards demonopathy. In his opinion, this is a neurosis that forces a person to invent demons for himself, which are nothing more than the result of the suppression of desires.
The church continues to believe in demons. For example, the Athenaeum Pontificium Regina Apostolorum institute was opened in Rome, where future exorcists are professionally trained.
By the way, there was such a person too. They were Archimandrite Herman from St. Sergius Lavra. True, we called an exorcist a “reprimand”.
There are such people in the same Judaism. In this religious direction, it is believed that the soul of a criminal who has not managed to leave the earth and is referred to as a dybbuk is infused into a person. The process of exile itself is carried out by an authoritative rabbi, surrounded by 10 other adult male Jews.
But it is worth noting that all these exorcism games are a very dangerous thing. Take at least the real story of Anneliese Michel, who in 1976 died from an exorcism, and the priest was accused of murder. Filmmakers picked up on this story by making The Six Demons of Emily Rose, adding their own artistic twist to it.
Children often suffer from this as well. For example, in 2003 in Wisconsin, priests killed an 8-year-old boy, claiming his disability was a sign of an invading demon. And in 2010, in England, relatives beat and drowned a 14-year-old teenager in an attempt to expel an evil spirit from him. But they did not believe in this, unlike a 16-year-old nun from France, who back in 1583 claimed that she was possessed by 12,606 demons, previously locked in a jar in the form of a bunch of flies.
Do you believe in such things? Or do you think that this is all a false hysteria, promoted to the maximum by the film industry?
