Among them – condoms, tea bags, watches. And not only.
Sanitary napkin
In 1917, the American company Kimberly-Clark began mass-producing cellulose wadding, which absorbed any liquid five times faster than any dressings. By 1920, the military began to reduce purchases of miracle wool and the question arose of reducing production. But then the idea of feminine sanitary pads came up. they say that she was prompted by nurses who worked in front-line hospitals.
This is how Kotex pads were born. At first they were not in great demand, and then there was a real boom and almost all women in the United States began to use pads, and then in the rest of the world.
Wrist watch
Of course, they were before the First World War. But they became popular during the war – during the hostilities they were simply necessary, if only in order to synchronize the start of the battle. Pilots were the first to receive them, and then the rest of the military.
After the war, wristwatches became a mass phenomenon and the first company to produce them for civilians was Cartier.
tea bags
They appeared at the beginning of the 20th century: a cunning American merchant sent samples of tea to shops in thin silk bags. And one of the potential buyers, for fun, dipped this bag into boiling water. As a result, I received a strong, aromatic drink without a single leaf in the tea.
Well, during the war, tea bags were appreciated by German soldiers. The Teekanne company supplied gauze bags with tea leaves to the front, and the military used them with pleasure. And after the First World War, many companies around the world launched the production of bags, but from cellulose filter paper.
Face wipes
In Russia, they are often called paper handkerchiefs. They were also invented by the craftsmen from Kimberly-Clark – when they thought about where to put the excess cellulose. They named the new product Kleenex and launched a mass advertisement. A few years later, napkins were already in the purse of every American lady.
zipper
Until 1913, elements of clothing or bags were connected with hooks and buttons. And then the chief designer of the Universal Fastener Company came up with a slider that connects small teeth.
Lightning began to be massively used during the war, and this invention hit the “citizen” in 1923.
condoms
They tried to invent in Italy in the XVI century. Then syphilis raged and for prevention they tried to use canvas bags soaked in herbal extracts. The idea is dubious and useless, and therefore did not take root.
But she was remembered during the First World War. Then an epidemic of syphilis broke out again in the troops and German scientists quickly bungled condoms – they did not differ much from modern ones, except that they were a little thicker. They began to be massively supplied to the troops and this stopped the epidemic of venereal diseases.
After the war, the British and French adopted condoms, and later they spread around the world.
